The Immune System : Our  Body’s  Natural  Defence  Mechanism

The human body has the ability to develop powerful specific protection against invaders such as dangerous bacteria, viruses and toxins. Its primary objective is to maintain balance (homeostasis) in the body. It keeps us well-protected against diseases and helps the body in tissue repair and healing to ensure that we are able to lead a healthy and long quality life. This natural network of  complex defence mechanism is called the Immune System.

The “military” that guards and protects our immune system as part of our body’s defence system is  our white blood cells (neutrophils and lymphocytes) and macrophages. Neutrophils are phagocytes and scavengers - devouring germs, dead cells and other foreign substances in the body.

Lymphocytes are made up of T cells. These cells mediate delayed hypersensitivity, destroy cells infected with viruses, interact with B cells to regulate production of antibodies. T cells are further subdivided into helper (T4) cells, suppressor (T8) cells and killer cells which interact and kill tumour cells.

Our macrophages are also phagocytes but are bigger, tougher, and stronger than neutrophils. They also function as communication links between other cells of our immune system, hormone-producing cells and nerve cells.

Immune  Enhancement :
The  Key to Longevity

The key to longevity is Immune enhancement. Science has proven that  by stimulating immune system functions , we are able to reduce the rate of “ wear and tear “ of the body and slow down the ageing process.
The Thymus gland, which is located behind the top of the breastbone, is a primary organ of  the immune system. The T-cells , which are our body’s soldiers in the fight against disease, are “trained” in the Thymus gland. The T-cells are instructed how to distinguish between
foreign proteins ( non-self ) and the body’s own proteins (self).

Unfortunately, the Thymus gland can shrink as we  age and reducing the ability of the T-cells to defend our body against any diseases. According to anti-ageing expert Dr. Ronald Klatz of the American Academy of  Anti-Ageing Medicine, a healthy Thymus gland at the time of birth may shrink up to 80% of its original size when one reaches the  age of 80 .

When this occurs, the immune system becomes vulnerable and  the body would be constantly exposed to immune system stressors like chemicals, toxins, radioactive substances, junk food, stress, and many other environmental factors.

These causes an imbalance in the immune system and may result in immune reactions such as  allergies, infections, auto-immune diseases and tumours. Thus, the natural defence mechanism is compromised.

According to Dr. Keith Kelley , a research immunologist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,  shrinking of the Thymus gland can be reversed by boosting and enhancing the Immune system .( Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1985)

By reversing the shrinking of the Thymus gland, the  body’s immune system balance can be  restored  to improve health and longevity.
